States can pay benefits to the unemployed past the September 6, cut-off date using the $350 billion in pandemic funds that Congress previously allocated to state and local governments, Treasury Department Officials said on Thursday, according to an NBC CT report.

An estimated 11 million people will lose unemployment benefits on September 6, when the extended pandemic era, unemployment benefits are set to expire. Treasury Secretary, Janet Yellen, and Labor Secretary, Marty Walsh, said in a letter to Congress members, that it makes sense for jobless workers to continue getting income support past September 6in states where unemployment remains high. They said, doing so would allow workers more time to find a job. According to a Labor Department spokesperson, states do not need to meet specific economic conditions to offer assistance.
