31-year old Emma Coronel Aispuro, who is a dual U.S.-Mexican citizen, was arrested Monday afternoon at Washington Dulles International Airport. Aispuro faces charges of participating in a conspiracy to distribute cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, and marijuana for importation into the United States. Aispuro is the wife of Mexican drug smuggler, and Cartel boss Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman. Aispuro was arrested and charged in connection with Chapo’s multi-billion dollar international drug cartel. According to NPR (@npr), Aispuro was also charged for helping Chapo escape from Altiplano Prison in Mexico back in 2015. Chapo is currently serving a “Life” prison sentence in the U.S. after being convicted of ten criminal counts in 2019. The Sinaloa Cartel, which Chapo ran for over 30-years is still very operational, according to drug enforcement agents. The FBI’s drug case against Aispuro seems to revolve on the fact that they believe Aispuro ran Chapo’s organization for years. Sometimes as a trusted messanger, sometimes she played the role of the stand-in boss in Chapo’s absence.
