These new images of Mars’ surface were taken by NASA’s Mars Perseverance Rover shortly after its landing on Mars. NASA’s “Mars helicopter”, “Ingenuity”, was on board The Perseverance when it landed on Mars. Both safely landed on Thursday. Both machines send signals and pictures back home to NASA’s team of Controllers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). JPL said the “Ingenuity” will have a test window of 30-days to see if it can survive in Mars’ extremely chilly temperatures at night.

“If Ingenuity survives its first bone-chilling Martian nights — where temperatures dip as low as minus 130 degrees Fahrenheit [minus 90 degrees Celsius] — the team will proceed with the first flight of an aircraft on another world,” JPL added. “If Ingenuity succeeds in taking off and hovering during its first flight, over 90 percent of the project’s goals will have been achieved. If the rotorcraft lands successfully and remains operable, up to four more flights could be attempted, each one building on the success of the last.” JPL said in a statement released to the press on Sunday morning.
