A man believed to be in his 40’s was shot and killed by police officers responding to a domestic dispute after he allegedly opened fire on police in the Fairhill section of the city yesterday.

A report from 6-ABC Action News said the shooting happened on the 2900 block of Lawrence Street at around 6:00 p.m. on Friday evening.
According to police, the unnamed suspect began firing at police officers as soon as they stepped out of their police cruisers. Four officers returned fire before the suspect jumped into one of the police vehicles.
“The male exits the property and continues to fire at the officers. The officers take a tactical retreat between vehicles–park vehicles— that are along the other side of the street. He continues to fire at officers as they approach the vehicle. The officers continue discharge. At one point in time the male exits the vehicle and then goes to the ground”, said First Deputy Commissioner, John Stanford.
The suspect was rushed to a nearby hospital where he died shortly after arriving. No police officers were injured during the shooting. Police said the weapon used by the suspect was found inside one of the police cars.
