A report from 6-ABC Action News said the incident happened along Broad Street at around 2:30 a.m. on Thursday morning.
Police believe the suspect may have been dealing with some sort of mental issues.
“According to individuals on the bus, the individual with the meat cleaver started chanting, saying some things, possibly had mental health issues”, said Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector, Scott Small.
The attack happened on the back of the bus. The bus driver reportedly pulled the bus over in front of a police station as he called for help. The victim managed to escape the bus and flag down an officer standing outside of the 9th Precinct. After he told the officer what happened, the officer jumped into action, boarding the bus and taking the suspect into custody. The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was last reported to be in stable condition. The suspect injured his finger during the attack. He was also taken to a nearby hospital.
Police said the two men do not know each other. There were reportedly 8 passengers aboard the bus at the time of the incident. No other injuries were reported. The suspect is in police custody and the meat cleaver was recovered at the scene.
