A report from 6-ABC Action News said the incident happened along the 3900 block of Broad Street at around 7:00 p.m. on Sunday evening.
Police said the victim was crossing the street at the location. He was in the center lane when he was struck by the vehicle, not in the crosswalk. The driver kept going after hitting the victim, who was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.
Police said that it is important for a driver to stay at the scene of an accident even if they’re scared at the time.
“If something happens where a person strikes another individual, that is not necessarily a crime if they remain at the location and wait for police, cooperate with police. Unfortunately, tragic accidents happen sometimes. However, once you leave the scene of an accident, now you’ve committed a crime”, said Philadelphia Police Inspector, D.F. Pace.
A front bumper and other pieces of the vehicle in question were found at the scene of the incident. Not too long afterward, the grey Nissan that the car parts belonged to was found under a tarp on Windrim Street. Police said they are now using surveillance video to identify the driver of the Nissan.
