A report from 7-ABC Los Angeles said the shooting happened at 87th Street & Denker Avenue at around 5:00 p.m. on Sunday evening.
Mylik’s mother, Zonyia Birdsong, said she saw her son murdered right in front of her home.
“I don’t know how to process it. He’s a triplet. I lost his other two brothers at birth. He survived it…it’s like I’m numb. They murdered my child right in front of me. Who does that?” Zonyia Birdsong told 7-ABC.
Zonyia Birdsong said her son came home to join the family for dinner. Before he could get out of the car, gunmen in a dark-colored SUV drove up and open fired on Mylik Birdsong. Zonyia said Mylik excited the vehicle and took off running as he was being fired on. She said the shooters kept firing on Mylik as he fell to the ground. Mylik suffered 7-gunshot wounds to the torso. The shooters fled the scene in the SUV. Birdsong was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.
Birdsong’s family said he was not in a gang. A possible motive for the shooting was not reported. No suspects were named and no arrests have been made at this time. Birdsong was the reigning World Boxing Foundation International welterweight champion. His next fight was scheduled for October 26, 2024. Malik had a professional record of 15-1-1 with 10 knockouts.
