A woman, who has been identified as 29-year old, Alexa Stakely, has reportedly died after being hit by her own car while attempting to save her 6-year old son after her car was carjacked outside of a home in Columbus, Ohio, with the child inside of the car sleeping.

A report from CNN said police were called to an apartment complex in the Castenea Way area at around 1:30 a.m. for a report of a woman that had been struck by a vehicle. Police said Stakely suffered from “sustained traumatic injuries”. Police rushed her to the hospital where she was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.
The 29-year old, single mother, had just finished working her shift at her 2nd job as a waitress and was picking her 6-year old son up from the babysitter’s house. She carried her sleeping son to her Honda SUV parked in front of the babysitter’s home. She left the car running with her son asleep inside to meet the babysitter at the doorway to collect one of her son’s belongings that she had missed. Police said, as she returned to her SUV she saw the vehicle begin to back out into the roadway. Stakely instantly began chasing the vehicle and was hit by the SUV and thrown to the pavement.
Police said the SUV was driven through the apartment complex and abandoned a short distance away. Police officers found the vehicle with the child inside. He was unharmed and still sleeping. A little later, police said two males were seen running past Stakely, who was still lying in the roadway. They jumped a fence and ran into a neighboring apartment complex before police lost track of the pair.
No arrests have been made at this time, but police believe two of the suspects were captured on surveillance video at the complex earlier in the day, looking into apartments in the area. When confronted they went further into the complex and out of view.
