A report from ABC News said 20-year old, Edward Kang, showed up at the victim’s home in Fernandina Beach, Florida, wearing all black clothes, black gloves and a black mask, late Saturday night or early Sunday morning.

Kang and the victim are reported to be around the same age. The two had also never met face-to-face before the attack. The online communication between the two mostly came through an online game named ArcheAge.

Police said Kang gained entry into the victim’s home through an unlocked door. Kang waited until the victim got up from gaming to go to the bathroom, before attacking him with the hammer. The victim managed to wrestle the hammer away from Kang, and subdue him, with the help of his stepfather who was awakened by the victim’s distressed screams for help. The pair detained the suspect until police arrived. The victim reportedly sustained “severe head trauma” as a result of the hammer attack. He was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated and has since been released. When police asked Kang why he did it, he told deputies that the victim was “a bad person online”.

Police said Kang flew from Newark, N.J., to Jacksonville, F.L. He reportedly arrived at a hotel not far from the victim’s home on Friday morning. Kang then went to a hardware store and purchased a flashlight and hammer shortly afterward, according to the receipts found in his hotel room. Kang was booked into the Nassau County Jail on Sunday. He was charged with second-degree murder and armed burglary.
