A Philadelphia Police Officer reportedly opened fire during a struggle with a suspect who had been accused of stealing a vehicle in North Philadelphia yesterday.

A report from 6-ABC Action News said the incident began when police responded to a call of the discovery of a stolen 2017 black Jeep Cherokee on the 1000 block of West Dakota Street at around 2:46 p.m. on Monday afternoon.
Police were at the scene waiting for the owner of the vehicle to arrive so they could recover the car when a man dressed in dark-clothing walked up to the Jeep and got into the driver’s seat.
“The owner relayed to them that they would be here to recover the car, so the officers retreated back to their unmarked vehicle. The owner said they were a short distance away”, said Philadelphia Police Deputy Commissioner, Frank Vanore.
Police approached the masked suspect and a struggle immediately ensued between the officers and the suspect police believed to be armed. The suspect took off in the stolen vehicle and one officer fired at the SUV.
“The officer was trying to extract the male from the car. And at that point, when they believed to see a firearm, one of them discharged into the car. Two officers standing by and someone tries to take the car right in front of them. That’s brazen”, Vanore said.
No officers were injured during the incident. Police said they did not know if the suspect was hit by gunfire as he fled the scene. Police are still searching for the stolen vehicle, which they say may have a broken rear window. An investigation is ongoing..
