32-year old, Kristel Candelario, from Cleveland, OH, was sentenced to serve life in prison without the possibility of parole yesterday, for leaving her 16-month old child home alone inside of a playpen, while she went on vacation in Puerto Rico for 10-days last year.

A report from CBS-2 Pittsburgh said that when Candelario returned home after 10-days she found the child was still in the playpen and not breathing. She called 9-1-1. Emergency responders said they found the child “extremely dehydrated” when they arrived. The child was pronounced dead shortly afterward. An autopsy determined that the child died from starvation and dehydration. Common County Pleas Court Judge Brendan Sheehan scolded Candelario before sentencing her to life in prison.
“Just as you didn’t let Jailyn (Candelario’s deceased child) out of her confinement, so too you should spend the rest of your life in a cell without freedom. The only difference will be, the prison will at least give you food and give you liquid that you denied her” said Judge Sheehan before sentencing.
