A report from 6-ABC Action News said the incident happened inside of the JD Sports store in Times Square at around 7 p.m. on Thursday evening.

Police say three suspects were seen stealing clothing and possibly sneakers from the store’s second floor area. The suspects reportedly placed the stolen items into a bag. The suspects were confronted by a female loss prevention employee in the lobby of the store, who asked to see a receipt. She was reportedly able to recover the stolen items at that point. Then one of the suspects (described as being “between the ages 15-20”), pulled out a gun from a shoulder strap bag and fired once at the employee. The bullet missed the loss prevention employee, but hit a 37-year old, female tourist, visiting America from Brazil. The victim was taken to Bellevue Hospital and is expected to survive.

The three suspects fled the store after the shooting. A police officer pursued the suspects on foot once they were outside of the store. The suspect who fired inside of the store, fired at the officer twice during the foot pursuit. Both shots missed. The officer drew his weapon but did not fire back due to the foot traffic on the street. The suspect ran into the subway where he managed to elude authorities.

One of the suspects was reportedly taken into police custody. Police are still searching for the other two.
