71-year old, Joseph M. Czuba was charged with stabbing a 6-year old boy to death and critically injuring the boy’s mother because they were Muslim, according to the Will County Sheriff’s Office.
A report from 6-ABC Action News said Czuba is alleged to have stabbed 6-year old, Wadea Al-Fayoume, 26 times during the attack in Plainfield, Illinois at around 11:40 a.m. on Saturday morning. The child’s 32-year old mother was also stabbed and critically wounded during the attack.
According to police: Wadea and his mother were ambushed, attacked, and stabbed, by Czuba, who is the family’s landlord at the property. Czuba has been charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and two counts of committing a hate crime.
The Will County Sheriff’s Office called the crime “cowardly” and “senseless”.
“Detectives were able to determine that both victims in this brutal attack were targeted by the suspect due to them being Muslim and the ongoing Middle Eastern conflict involving Hamas and the Israelis” said the Will’s County Sheriff’s Office during the announcement of the charges against Czuba on Sunday afternoon.
Police have not elaborated any further at this time. Czuba is currently being held at Will County’s Adult Detention Facility in Joliet, IL. Czuba is scheduled for arraignment on Monday.
