A United States soldier who was facing disciplinary actions, reportedly crossed the Korean Demilitarized Zone and fled South Korea and made his way into North Korea.

A report from the Associated Press said the soldier has been identified as Private 2nd Class, Travis King. The 20-something year old Private had reportedly just been released from a South Korean prison. King had been held there on assault charges. More charges were expected to be brought against King by the United States Military.
On Tuesday, King was escorted to the airport so he could be returned to Fort Bliss, Texas to find out his fate for the charge. Instead of getting on the airplane, King fled the airport. He joined a tour to the Korean village of Panmunjom. That was where he reportedly ran across the border and fled to North Korea.
The United States believes King is more than likely in North Korean custody.
“We’re closely monitoring and investigating the situation and working to notify the soldier’s next of kin. This will develop in the next several days and hours, we’ll keep you posted,” said U.S. Defense Secretary, Lloyd Austin at the Pentagon on Tuesday.
The report did not elaborate on how King managed to escaped when he was being escorted. There was also no reporting of what additional military charges king may have been facing.
