A report from the Associated Press said the shooting happened inside of a Wal-Mart store in Lauder Lakes on Tuesday afternoon.

Investigators say Sterling went to the Walmart store to meet with a female employee. At some point, Sterling and the unidentified female employee got into an argument. The argument quickly escalated into a physical fight between the two. During the tussle, it is alleged that Sterling dropped a handgun onto the floor. As the male customer moved in to assist the female, Sterling allegedly retrieved his gun and fired several shots at the customer. The unidentified male victim was hit multiple times. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sterling fled the store after the shooting, but was reportedly apprehended on the same day, just a few hours after the murder. A spokesman for Walmart gave a statement on the in-store incident.

“Senseless violence like this is intolerable, and we’re heartbroken the customer who intervened in an apparent attack on one of our associates has died from his injuries. We offer our heartfelt condolences to his family during this difficult time and will continue working with our associates, providing support as needed”, said Walmart Spokesman, Charles Crowson.

Crowson also said Sterling has been suspended and steps are underway to terminate his employment. Sterling has been charged with 1st-degree murder. He is being held without bail.
