A Fox-29 Philly report said the shooting happened on the 1500 block of Taney Street at around 5 p.m. on Sunday evening.

The child’s mother told investigators that she was walking down the street, carrying her son, when she heard two or three gunshots nearby. When she looked down she realized her child had been shot in the cheek. A nearby bystander rushed the child and mother to the Fire Department Station on 31st & Grays Ferry Avenue, after realizing she didn’t have enough gas to make it to the hospital. First responders at the fire station stabilized the child before rushing him to Children’s Hospital Of Philadelphia. The child’s current condition was not reported.

Investigators said the quick thinking of the bystander, who has been identified as Meeka Outlaw, likely saved the child’s life. Outlaw said she was unloading groceries from her car and was planning to go get gas for her car after she finished, when the incident began.

“I saw a mom that was in distress and I’m a mother too. Seeing the girl running up the street with the baby and blood, it just, it does something. I guess it was just a mom instinct. As I was on the phone calling the ambulance, that’s when she was like , ‘He’s not breathing!’ I put her in the car and I realized I didn’t have enough gas,” said Outlaw.

Outlaw went on to say she knew she didn’t have enough gas to make it to the hospital so she told the 911 operator that she was heading to the fire station. Police said they checked in the area for any sign of a crime scene up the street from where the child was shot, but was unsuccessful. An investigation is ongoing.
