85-year old, Andrew Lester has been charged with armed assault after shooting 16-year old, Ralph Yarl, who was shot by Lester as he was attempting to pick up his younger siblings from a neighbor’s home.
A report from the Associated Press said Yarl, a 16-year old, African American mistakenly approached the wrong house and rang the doorbell. Lester, an 85-year old, white man, reportedly opened the door and shot Yarl in the head. He then shot him again.
16-year old, Yarl, was last reported to be out of the hospital, and back at home recovering. He was released from the hospital on Sunday, according to the report.
Lester was reportedly taken in to custody on Thursday. After Kansas City, Police Chief, Stacey Graves, and Prosecuting Attorney, Zachary Thompson, had a “consultation”, it was decided to release Lester the very next day. Charges were finally brought against Lester on Monday morning.
“We understand how frustrating this has been but I can assure the criminal justice system is working and will continue to work,” Thompson said at a press conference.
