A former Philadelphia police officer was sentenced to jail for shooting and killing an unarmed black man in 2017. A CBS-3 Philly report said Eric Ruch Jr. was sentenced to 11.5 to 23 months in jail on Thursday morning, in a Center City Common Pleas courtroom.

Ruch Jr. was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter for the shooting and killing of Dennis Plowden, a black man who was unarmed when he was killed. Ruch Jr. was also found guilty of possession of an instrument of crime. He was found not guilty by a jury on a charge of third-degree murder.
Ruch Jr. was the first Philadelphia Police officer to ever be convicted for killing a civilian in Philadelphia’s history. His bail was revoked after sentencing and he was immediately taken into custody.
