POPULAR INSTAGRAM INFLUECER “HUSHPUPPI” SENTENCED TO OVER 11-YEARS IN FEDERAL PRISON

40-year old, social media influencer, Ramon Abbas A.K.A. Hushpuppi, was sentenced to a little more than 11-years in prison in a courtroom in California on Monday. A report from Insider said Abbas was also ordered to pay $1.7 million in restitution to two fraud victims.

Abbas’ was sentenced to 135-months in federal prison after being convicted on money laundering and internet fraud charges. Abbas has been in federal custody since his arrest in Dubai and expulsion from the United Arab Emirates in June of 2020.

Prosecutors had argued that, in one of the cases of money laundering from 2019, Abbas and a co-conspirator laundered $14.7 million for a group of North Korean hackers who stole the money from a bank in Malta.

Prosecutors had also alleged that, Abbas conspired with others to defraud a businessman in Qatar who tried to loan $15 million to build a school.

After duping the businessman to transfer around $330,000 to facilitate the loan, Abbas reportedly used the money to purchase luxury items that he flexed on his Instagram page, “Hushpuppie”. Prosecutors noted a $230,000 Richard Mille watch that was seen on Abbas’ wrist in multiple Instagram posts.

The luxurious lifestyle full of private jet flights, luxury cars, and designer clothes Abbas appeared to lead through his Instagram photos, caught the attention of the Feds. At trial, multiple pictures posted to his Instagram account were used as evidence against Abbas.
