In the middle of the attack, Francis was able to retrieve his handgun and fire several rounds, causing the bear to flee. According to authorities, one of the shots fired hit Francis in the leg. Francis’ son was able to call emergency services using a satellite phone while administering first-aid care to his father. As night neared, and still awaiting the arrival of emergency services, Francis’ son decided to take matters into his own hands. He was able to get Francis up on a horse and over to a nearby lake to meet with search and rescue volunteers.

Francis was given further aid by medics before being taken to a life flight helicopter and flown to University Of Utah Hospital for further treatment. There was no word given about Francis’ current condition.
