A 23-year old man was reportedly shot by an officer as an altercation ensued in Center City early this morning. A 6 ABC Action News report said the incident happened at 13th & Chancellor Streets at around 3 a.m. on Sunday morning.
Two plainclothes officers who were in the area after working security at a nearby nightclub, ran into a fight involving several males. In an attempt to disperse the crowd, the plainclothes officers, reportedly announced that they were police. The warning did not stop the fighting. The officers physically stepped in between the two males who were fighting, in an attempt to break up the fight. At that point, the crowd that had come to watch the fight reportedly turned on the officers.
One of the officers were punched in the face by someone in the crowd. When the officers attempted to arrest the assailant, he allegedly pulled out a gun and pointed it at them. One of the officers pulled out his weapon and shot at at the suspect, hitting him in the shoulder. The 23-year old was suspect was apprehended and detained by police before being taken to the hospital by ambulance. The suspect was last reported to be in critical condition.
This marks the second police-involved shooting in the last two days in the city of Philadelphia.
