An unidentified woman who is believed to be in her 40’s or 50’s was struck and killed by a hit and run driver in the Germantown section of the city last night. According to a 6 ABC Action News report, witnesses say at least four people fled from the vehicle that hit the woman on foot after the incident, which happened at around 11 p.m. on Greene Street near West Coulter Avenue on Thursday night.
According to police, a white Chevy SUV traveling North on Greene Street, crossed over into oncoming traffic and jumped the curb, before smashing into a utility pole. The Chevy continued along the sidewalk where it hit the victim. The vehicle reportedly traveled another 50 feet before coming down from the curb and stopping right in front of Germantown Friends School. Police and paramedics pronounced the victim dead at the scene.
“According to the witnesses, four people got out of the vehicle and fled in a Northbound direction. We don’t have any description of the four people that fled. This female had no chance. It’s a real tragedy. she was dragged – we believe about 15 feet – and possibly run over by this Chevy SUV because she had severe injuries”, said Philadelphia Chief Inspector, Scott Small.
Police said the victim was not carrying any identification at the time. The victim is believed to be in her 40’s or 50’s, and she was wearing scrubs.
A quick search of the license plate led police to identify the person the SUV is registered to, but no suspects have been named and no arrests have been made at this time.
