R&B singer & producer, R. Kelly, was sentenced to 30- years behind bars this afternoon, following his conviction on federal racketeering and sex trafficking charges last September. A report from CNN said Kelly’s lawyers asked the judge to sentence the singer to less than 10-years in prison. Citing Kelly’s past issues of being abused himself as a child. The prosecution asked the judge for 25-years behind bars for Kelly, which the singer’s attorney claimed was “tantamount to a life sentence”. For a 55-year old, that may actually be true.
District Court Judge Ann Donnelly told Kelly before sentencing, that she did consider his traumatic experience during sentencing
“You left in your wake a trail of broken lives. It may explain, at least in part, what led to your behavior. It most surely is not an excuse”. Donnelly told Kelly and his lawyer before sentencing the singer.
Prosecutors alleged that Kelly used his celebrity and “a network of people at his disposal to target girls, boys, and young women for his own sexual gratification.”
