19-year old, Southern University, freshman cheerleader, Arlana Miller, died this week, after reportedly posting an alarming message on social media. NBC NEWS reported that Miller’s final (since deleted) Instagram post reportedly referenced the freshman athlete’s struggles over the past year with Covid-19, school, and tearing her ACL.
“Our entire campus is deeply saddened by the untimely death of Arlana Miller, a freshman who was majoring in agriculture on the Baton Rouge campus.” Southern University President Chancellor, Ray L. Belton, said in a statement on Thursday.
The Athletic Department noted that Arlana’s death happened during Mental Health Awareness Month, according to the report. The report did not disclose Arlana Miller’s cause of death, but did go on to say there has been a recent rash of suicides among student athletes, with a high percentage of those suicides being credited to pressures mentally, academically, and physically.
