38-year old Rafiq Thompson who was already charged in the shooting death of his ex-girlfriend, 31-year old, Tamara Cornelius, has also been charged in the death of the 14-week child she was carrying in her stomach. NBC-10 PHILADELPHIA, reported that the incident happened on Friday April 8th, as the mother of three was pumping gas into her car, at an Exxon Gas Station across the street from the King Of Prussia Mall.
Detectives say Thompson and Cornelius had a previous relationship. In the days before her murder, Thompson allegedly asked Cornelius if she could meet with him so they could talk. Thompson allegedly called Cornelius 21 times and texted her 93 more times, before she finally agreed to meet with him. Cornelius reportedly told Thompson that he “was stalking her” before the two met for dinner on April 8th. The two allegedly spoke for a short time once meeting. Thompson reportedly left the restaurant before the food arrived.
Police say Thompson left the restaurant, but did not leave the area. He reportedly waited outside of the restaurant for a half-hour before Cornelius exited the establishment. Thompson allegedly followed her in his car, with his headlights turned off. Cornelius pulled into a gas station near the King Of Prussia Mall to get gas. At that point, Thompson allegedly exited his vehicle and walked up behind Cornelius. After a brief argument, Thompson reportedly shot at Cornelius at least four times. She stumbled and fell as she tried to run away. Thompson allegedly stood over her as she lay on the ground suffering from gunshot wounds. Thompson got into his car and drove away after shooting Cornelius and leaving her to die.
Police arrived at the scene a short time later. Police reported that Cornelius was bleeding heavily when they found her. Cornelius was rushed to Paoli Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 11:09 p.m.
Thompson reportedly went to Mcdonald’s after killing his ex-girlfriend. Investigators recovered Thompson’s receipt at the restaurant after tracking him down. They also recovered video of Thompson at the drive-thru. Thompson reportedly threw the gun away, on the side of the road. Someone came along and found it. They immediately turned the gun in to police. A ballistics expert reportedly confirmed that the weapon found on the side of the road was the murder weapon.
Thompson is being charged with first-degree murder, illegal possession of a gun (Thompson was reportedly out on parole at the time of the crime), and other related charges in the murder of Tamara Cornelius.
