Two prison inmates are dead and 10 others are hospitalized, after the 12 inmates attempted to get drunk by ingesting hand sanitizer. The news caused other prisons around the country to immediately ban all alcohol-based hand sanitizer from Sri Lanka’s prisons.
A report from VICE NEWS WORLD said the prisons have began giving inmates soap as an alternative. Prison officials said all 12 inmates who fell ill from drinking hand sanitizer were Iranian Nationals who have been incarcerated since their arrests in 2019. The 12 were busted smuggling nearly 76 kilos of heroin into the country.
