Former Brunswick, Georgia, Judicial Circuit District Attorney, Jackie Johnson, was indicted by a grand jury on Thursday. Johnson was indicted on a felony count of violating her oath of office, and one count of hindering a law enforcement officer. The second charge is a misdemeanor. The charges accuse Johnson of using her position to shield the men who chased and killed Ahmaud Arbery from being charged with crimes immediately after the shootings, according to a report from ABC News.

The indictment resulted from an investigation Georgia Attorney General, Chris Carr requested last year. The investigation was concerning local prosecutors’ handling of Arbery’s murder, after cell phone video and a delay in charges against the accused, caused the case to garner national attention, and national outcry. Arbery was murdered after a white father and son (Greg & Travis McMichael), armed themselves and pursued the black man in their pickup truck after spotting him running in the neighborhood, just outside of the coastal city of Brunswick, about 70 miles South of Savannah, Georgia. Neighbor, William “Roddie” Bryan joined the chase, and recorded Travis McMichael shooting Arbery at close range with a shotgun. The McMichaels claimed Arbery was a burglar, and that he’d attacked them before being shot. The video taken by the neighbor proved both claims to be false.

“While an indictment was returned today, our file is not closed, and we will continue to investigate in order to pursue justice.”

Georgia Attorney General, Carr said in a statement released on Thursday.
