Prison officials say an inmate is accused of killing one of his cellmates using a sock and bandana, according to a report from The Brandenton Herald.

The victim, 66-year old, Curtis Smith, was found face-down and unresponsive in a cell at about 11:40 am, according to an arrest affidavit. Texas Rangers were bought into The Bexar County Jail to investigate. That was when they found a sock in Smith’s mouth. Deputies attempted to revive Smith, but he was pronounced dead at 12:03pm.

Two other inmates were in the cell with Smith when he was killed. 52-year old, Mark Anthony Wong, and a 26-year old unidentified inmate. The Bexar County Sheriff’s Department, said Wong and Smith got into an argument that quickly escalated. Wong told investigators that he was trying to hold Smith down. Wong said Smith was making obscenities and threatening to assault him. Wong said he then twisted the blue bandana around Smith’s neck tight, before shoving one of the 26-year old inmate’s socks into Smith’s mouth. Wong said he also killed Smith because he feared being sexually assaulted by him. Wong also said Smith had never attempted to sexually assault him.

Wong was being held in the Bexar County Jail on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and assault with bodily injury. He now faces 1st degree murder charges.
