36-year old, Republican State Rep., Mark Samsel, is accused of kicking a high school student in the groin. Samsel explained the incident as an “isolated” episode.” An episode Samsel claimed was due to “extreme” stress, which caused him to have “an isolated episode of mania with psychotic features” in a classroom. Samsel had been a licensed state substitute teacher. He surrendered his license on Wednesday, according to NBC News.
Samsel faces three misdemeanor criminal charges of battery. The prosecutor called Samsel’s interactions with two students “rude, insulting, or angry.” The two students, ages 15 or 16, were students in an art class taught by Samsel. One student told the sheriff’s deputy that Samsel had manhandled him and kicked him.
Samsel has served in the house since 2019. He pleaded not guilty to the charges he faces, which carry a six-month prison sentence for each count. Samsel has a court appearance scheduled for Aug. 16.
