HAITI’S PRESIDENT JOVENEL MOISE ASSASSINATED AT HIS HOME

PORT-AU-PRINCE, HAITI

Gunmen assassinated Haitian President, Jovenel Moise and wounded his wife early on Wednesday morning. Interim Prime Minister, Claude Joseph confirmed the killing. He also said the police and military were in control of security in Haiti, which reportedly has a long history of dictatorship and political upheaval, all of which is to avoid the consolidation of Democratic rule.

The Los Angeles Times reported that the streets of Haiti’s Capital, Port-Au-Prince were relatively quiet after hearing the news on Wednesday morning. There were reports of businesses being ransacked in one area of the Capital City. The 53-year old Haitian President, had been ruling the Country by decree for more than a year, after the country failed to hold elections. In recent months, the opposition had been demanding that Moise step down as President.

A resident who lives near the President’s home said she heard the attack

“I thought there was an earthquake, there was so much shooting. The President had problems with many people, but this was not how we expected him to die. This something I wouldn’t wish on any Haitian.”

The woman, who spoke on condition of anonymity said. Interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph, said some of the gunmen spoke Spanish. A statement Joseph later changed to “they spoke Spanish or English.”
