Baltimore City State’s Attorney, Marilyn Mosby announced on Friday, that the city would no longer prosecute low-level crimes, such as prostitution and drug possession. Mosby’s office is supposedly working on a 1-year experiment to attempt to keep low-level offenders out of jails and prison, in hopes of reducing the spread of Covid-19 behind bars.

CNN (@cnn) reported, Mosby’s experiment is known as “The Covid Criminal Justice Policies.” The experiment is supposed to be an approach to crime, developed with public health authorities.
“Today, America’s war on drug users is over in the city of Baltimore. We leave behind the era of tough-on-crime prosecution and zero tolerance policing and no longer default to the status quo to criminalize mostly people of color for drug addiction.”
Mosby said in an official press release. The program has led to decreases in the overall incarcerated Baltimore population by 18%. Violent and property crimes are also down. 20 and 36% respectively.
