With unemployment benefits about to run out for millions of Americans, Congress is rushing to get more relief to the American population, who are still suffering from job losses and other problems due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Late Sunday, lawmakers zoomed in on a bill that would provide roughly $300 in extra federal benefits for the unemployed. That’s good news for many millions of Americans. But, there are no $1200 stimulus payments for all Americans in this bill. Instead, it’s looking like Congress will wait for Joe Biden to take office in January, and let him figure it out. Of course, there will be a mostly new Congress at that time, so your guess as to how that will turn out, is as good as mine.

The total price of the bill released on Monday, is expected to be near a reported $908 billion in total. That $908 billion package is reportedly going to be connected to a bigger bill that would avert a government shutdown, that is scheduled to start this weekend.

President-elect Biden publicly stated that he hoped the new relief package would include the $1200 payments for all Americans, but multiple Senators involved in the talks said the checks would not be included in any compromise, putting those in favor of $1200 payments in a tight predicament. Including Senator Bernie Sanders, who threatened to vote against any bill that did not include the direct payments. Democrat Senator Dick Durbin said, excluding the $1200 checks from the bill, while assuring that there was money for rent-relief and small business aid, was the only way to get an agreement on the bill from Republicans, who put a price limit on the bill’s final price tag, according to an article from the Chicago Tribune (@chicagotribune)

“The $1200 check, it cost we believe, nationally $300 billion to give you an idea. The Democrats have always wanted a larger number, but we were told we couldn’t get anything through the Republicans, except this $900 billion level”
