On Friday, Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that the country will be banning all types of assault weapons. The ban includes over 1500 models, variations, and styles, of assault rifles and other assault firearms. NBC News (@nbcnews) reported, that in his announcement on Friday, Trudeau also said that there will be a two year amnesty period for current “law abiding” gun owners to protect them from criminal liability until they can take steps to comply with the new law and the country will legislate fair compensation.

“Canadians deserve more than thoughts and prayers. These weapons were designed for one purpose only: to kill the largest number of people in the shortest amount of time. There is no use, and no place for such a weapon in Canada.” Trudeau said on Friday.
The last mass shooting in Canada took place on January 22, 2016 when a 17-year old boy shot and killed two teenage brothers at a house in Northern Saskatchewan. The boy then went to a local school where he shot and killed two teachers and wounded seven others. Canada has had 13 mass shootings since 1965. There were 36 mass shootings in the United States just in the month of December 2019 alone.
