After a three week trial a Manhattan jury reached a verdict in the trial of lawyer Michael Avenatti. Guilty. The tough talking lawyer who rose to national fame when he represented porn star Stormy Daniels in a lawsuit against Donald Trump, was found guilty after the jury deliberated for less than two days.

According to NBC News (@nbcnews), prosecutors alleged that Avenatti demanded that Nike pay a client of his $1.5 million and pay him and an unnamed associate between $15 and $25 million to conduct an “internal investigation” for the company. According to prosecutors, Avenatti was in debt up to his neck to the tune of over $1 million at the time he attempted to extort Nike.

Avenatti allegedly met with top Nike brass On March 19th claiming to represent a youth basketball coach who had information that Nike employees had made illicit payments to high school athletes. Avenatti threatened to go public with the info if Nike didn’t pay the millions that he asked for. Nike went to the Feds. The next day federal agents recorded a phone call between Nike executives and Avenatti

I’m not fu**ing around with this, and I’m not continuing to play games. You guys know enough now to know you’ve got a serious problem. And it’s worth more in exposure to me to just blow the lid on this thing. A few million dollars doesn’t move the needle for me.” Avenatti said on the call.

Avenatti was arrested that same month after tweeting that he was having a press conference tomorrow to “disclose a major high school/college basketball scandal perpetrated by @Nike”
