A six count grand jury indictment charging former “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett for allegedly lying to authorities about being harassed and physically abused by some racist Trump loyalist, was announced today by Cook County’s State Attorney, Kim Foxx. Smollett was re-indicted for allegedly lying about the attack in January of last year.

ABC 7 Chicago (@abc7) reported, police allege that Smollett staged the attack on himself because he was unhappy with his salary on the show he starred in, “Empire.” Smollett had previously been charged with 16 counts. They were dismissed by Foxx’s office back in Feb. of last year.

“We are continuing to avail ourselves of how this case was handled. As I said from the very beginning, we welcome the non-political review and that is ongoing.” Fox told reporters on Wednesday.

A special prosecutor was assigned in August to investigate Foxx and her office’s decision to drop the Smollett case back in February. That special prosecutor, Dan Webb reopened the Smollett case and convinced a grand jury to indict Smollett on the 6 charges he is currently facing. Foxx and some of her supporters believe the decision to reopen the case was purely of a political nature. “We have an election coming up in the next five weeks, I certainly would hope that the decision made in this case was based on facts, the evidence, and the law.” Foxx said yesterday.

Foxx’s opponent in the upcoming election, Bill Conway, has been running ads for weeks attacking Foxx about the decision to dismiss the Smollett case. Another one of Foxx’s opponents in the upcoming election, Donna Moore issued a statement saying “This can no longer be considered just an error in judgement or a disappointing lack of transparency. There may be significant wrongdoing on the part of the State’s Attorney.”
