Former Washington NAACP chapter leader Rachel Dolezal has been charged with committing welfare fraud. If you’re not aware of why the name Rachel Dolezal sounds familiar to you, to make a long story short…..she is a white woman who was posing as a black woman and was subsequently outed for “faking the funk.” That was pretty much Dolezal’s claim to fame in a nutshell. Dolezal legally changed her name to Nkechi Diallo in 2016 after receiving heavy backlash from the African-American community and news outlets and blogs about living her lie for so long.

The New York Daily News (@NYDailyNews) reports, Dolezal allegedly stole $8000 worth of food stamps in 2016, and another $100 in child care assistance from August of 2015 until November of 2017.  Dolezal didn’t get “hot” until she published her autobigraphy “In Full Color: Finding My Place In A Black And White World.” It was then, that investigators started looking into Dolezal’s finances. At the time, she was receiving public assistance and reported that she was making only $500 a month.

Court documents and income tax showed a completely different story. The documents showed that Dolezal made $84,000 between August 2015 and September 2017 that she did not report. Dolezal has also been charged with perjury and false verification for public assistance. The perjury charges comes from Dolezal’s claims to investigators that she had fully disclosed her financial information. This was before they found that $84,000 she had tucked away. Dolezal is looking at a maximum 15-years in prison behind the multiple charges.
