“I hope it’s a trap and ya’ll get shot. We know it’s fixing to be nothing but black people walking out anyway.”
18-year old, Morgan Roof said in a Snapchat post of students who were planning to participate in National Walkout Day at her South Carolina high school. Morgan is the sister of domestic terrorist/ racist Dylan Roof. The man who gunned down 9 innocent and unarmed black people in a South Carolina church in 2015. I guess the racist apple doesn’t fall far from the racist tree huh?
Morgan was arrested on Wednesday after a school resource officer found a knife, pepper spray, and an undetermined amount of weed on her person. Roof was arrested on drug and weapons charges and taken to a detention center, Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said in a statement.
Roof was taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center in Columbia. Local media reported that she was being held on a $5,000 bond. It was not immediately clear if she had been released or if she had a lawyer. A.C. Flora High School principal, Susan Childs said the threat posted on Snapchat played no part in Roof’s arrest.
“The posting was not a threat, but was extremely inappropriate. The student was dealt with in a swift and severe manner as the posting caused quite a disruption.”
As usual, school staff and law enforcement fail to recognize a real threat, “for some strange reason.” Based on the Snapchat post alone, Roof should be taken as a real and credible threat to harm a person or people. We’re living in a different time. A time where every threat to the safety of students needs to be taken seriously and handled appropriately. If harming people is what Roof wants to do, a slap on the wrist by authorities and a $5,000 bond will only give her more motivation to want to carry out some heinous crime……if that was her intentions. When will we, as a society learn to take notice to obvious warning signs? When will we start taking action BEFORE tragedy strikes? When will the color of a person’s skin stop allowing authorities to gauge a person’s threat level? We all know, a clear threat would have played out very differently if Roof’s skin color had been a few shades darker. Why does she deserve the benefit of the doubt, as being “just a kid blowing off steam on social media” and not a serious threat? HOW MANY MORE STUDENTS MUST DIE BEFORE WE LEARN???
