Coming off of a big win against Carolina last week, and going up against a division opponent for the second time this season, this game went almost exactly how I expected it to. Before last night’s game, the Eagles had already beat the Redskins once. Division teams don’t like to get swept. I was certain this game was going to be a struggle, even though the Redskins record suggested that this should’ve been an easy win for the Eagles. Coming off a big win against Carolina last week, all signs pointed at the Eagles having a letdown and losing the game to the Redskins last night. That is what Eagles teams of the past were usually known for. Finding a way to lose the games they were supposed to win. The game started off looking like it was headed in that direction. Then it took a turn. The Eagles team that you see on the field this year is not the Eagles teams of the past.

Washington got the scoring started early when they drove straight down the field on the opening drive of the game. The Eagles Defense managed to tighten up in the red zone and hold the Skins to a field goal. The Eagles looked sluggish on offense. The team had four penalties on the first drive, that backed them up into a third and forever. Carson Wentz threw a deep interception that turned out to be about as good as a punt. The Redskins got the ball in good position, around mid-field, but the Eagles defense managed to hold the Skins without allowing any more points. No more points were scored by either team in the first qtr. Scoring resumed early in the 2nd quarter when Eagles kicker Jake Elliot nailed a 50-yarder. The Skins turned around and went on a 7 play 81 yard drive that was capped off by a 7-yd TD catch by Chris Thompson from Kirk Cousins. The Touchdown put the Skins up 10-3. The Eagles tied the game up when Carson Wentz hit Mack Hollins with a perfect 64-yard bomb. The Eagles added another touchdown when Carson Wentz hit Tight End Zach Ertz with a 4-yard td pass. Eagles went into halftime with a 17-10 lead. Wentz struck again for his third touchdown pass of the night as he hit running back Corey Clements with a 9-yard pass putting the Eagles up by two touchdowns 24-10 early in the third quarter. Cousin hit his tight end Reed for a 5-yard td strike to cut the Eagles lead to 7, still in the third quarter. Eagles opened the fourth quarter with another Wentz td pass, this time a 9-yarder to wide receiver Nelson Agholor. Jake Elliot added a 42-yard filed goal on the next drive to put the Birds up 17, in the 4th quarter. The Redskins added another touchdown, but the game was already out of reach. Eagles win 34-24, in a game that turned out not to be as close as the final score read.

The Eagles were the better team last night and they showed it. The defense had a solid effort once again. The front four kept pressure on Kirk Cousins all night, and the Eagles managed to keep the Redskins ground attack in check. Carson Wentz was phenomenal once again, throwing for four touchdowns, and pulling off what will probably be the play of the year, when he escaped from a for sure sack on third and long. Wentz took care of the ball again, only turning it over one time, on a long interception. One downside from last night’s victory was the loss of offensive lineman Jason Peters. That’s something that you might want to keep an eye on. If the Birds can’t find a suitable replacement for Peters, everything will fall apart. But, for now…..The Eagles are clearly the best team in the NFC. The Eagles are the only 6-1 team in the league. The Birds have a choke-hold on the NFC East with a two game lead. The Eagles hold their destiny in their own hands from here on out. The mantra is simple: Take Care Of Business! This team has made me into a believer. I BELIEVE! Oh, on a side note, the 76ers got their first win of the season last night. They beat the Detroit Pistons 97-86. The young phenom Ben Simmons got the first triple double of his young career with 21 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assist. Things are looking up for the city of Philadelphia in the sports world. Philly is no longer the team to look at on your schedule and think it’s going to be an easy win. We will win something this year! Count on it!
