CAM NEWTON THE CENTER OF CONTROVERSY AFTER COMMENTS TO FEMALE REPORTER

Cam Newton has found himself in the middle of another controversy after comments he made to a female reporter on Wednesday afternoon. Newton was asked about wide receiver Devin Funchess’ embracing the physicality of routes and if Newton got enjoyment out of that by Charlotte Observer beat reporter Jourdan Rodriguez, to which Cam replied:

“It’s funny to hear a female talk about routes like….it’s funny”

Rodriguez obviously didn’t find much funny about Cam’s replies as she took to Twitter minutes later to express her view:

“I don’t think it’s funny to be a female and talk about routes. I think it’s my job. Rodriguez also added “I spoke with him after and it was worse. I chose not to share, because I have an actual job to do today and one he will not keep me from.”

It’s not clear what Newton and Rodriguez spoke about after the press conference. It’s also not clear if Cam apologized when the two spoke in private. The Association For Women In Sports Media (AWSM) released a statement on the situation:

“We are very discouraged by Cam Newton’s disrespectful remarks and actions directed toward a female reporter during today’s Carolina Panthers press conference. As a watchdog group, AWSM demands fair treatment and positive workplace environments for women working in sports media.”
