The Tennessee Titans have signed free agent Quarterback Brandon Weedon to the team’s 53-man roster. Starting QB Marcus Mariota left Sunday’s game against the Texans with a hamstring injury. Mariota is listed as day to day. Backup QB Matt Cassel filled in for Mariota in last week’s game. Titans coach Mike Mularky said that it’s possible that the team won’t know Mariota’s playing status up until as late as Sunday. Translation: “Mariota is out, and Cassel is garbage. So we better go out and get somebody who we might be able to toss into the game if Cassel goes out there and throws five interceptions in the first half on Sunday.”
Brandon Weeden has played in the NFL since the 2012 season. He spent two seasons with the Browns (2012-2013), two with the Cowboys where he was mostly a backup for Tony Romo (2014-2015), and two season with the Houston Texans (2015-2016), where he played in a total of six games. Weeden’s career stats are less than stellar (6,642 passing yards, 57.9 completion %, 31 TD’S and 30 INT), which made people wonder why the Titans decided to pass up the opportunity to grab up free agent Colin Kaepernik. It makes sense. In a system that’s catered to a mobile quarterback (Mariota), one can’t help but to wonder if Kap would be the perfect fit. Depending on if, and how long Mariota might be out of action, the Titans may need something that’s a little better option than Cassel and Weeden to hold down the fort until Mariota returns. That’s just my take on the situation. Those two options are not going to be enough if the Titans hope to remain competitive in Mariota’s absence. Once again, just my opinion. But, hey, maybe the Titans organization and coach Mularky know something that I don’t. It’s possible, but I seriously doubt it.
