Former Rep. Anthony Weiner was sentenced to 21 months in federal prison for sexting with a minor on Monday. Sentencing Judge, Denise Cote also slapped Werner with three years of supervised release. Judge Cote also stated “because of the defendant’s notoriety, there is intense interest in the defendant’s plea and sentence. It could make a difference in lives and is a very significant part of this sentence.” Cote also added “This is a serious crime that deserves serious punishment.” CNN (@CNN) reported that Werner cried when the sentence was handed down.
In May of this year, Werner pleaded guilty to one count of transferring obscene material to a minor. The charges stem from communications that Werner had with a then, 15 year old girl on Social Media sites between January and March of 2016. Â For those of you who may have visions in your mind of Werner going to one of those hardcore penitentiary’s like you’ve seen on tv shows like “OZ” and “The Night Of”, I’m sorry to disappoint you, but it’s highly unlikely that this will be the case in Werner’s situation. Federal prisoners are housed based on guidelines which factor in: nature of the crime, criminal history, and a few other determining factors. A first time, non-violent sex offender like Werner will most likely be sent to a prison camp to serve his 21 month sentence, which could end up being as little as 15-18 months if he plays his cards right. Prison camp is exactly what it sounds like. No cells, no barbed wire, no prison guards roaming the recreation yard carrying large rifles. There’s probably not even a “Big Bubba” there anxiously awaiting Werner’s arrival. Prison camp is pretty much like the summer-overnight camp that you went to when you were a kid. The only difference is, this one is for adults. Adults who have been convicted of a crime. Werner will report to a yet to be disclosed, or decided prison on November 6 of this year.
